Set in the Galapagos Islands, a new children's book entitled "Buddy Booby's Birthmark" is a colorful, thought-provoking story about self-acceptance and sensitivity to others' appearances. Forwarded by CBS's Hannah Storm, herself the bearer of a birthmark, the story is of Buddy, a young booby bird who is born with a red birthmark. When his mother introduces the new arrival to their friends, the responses are less than favorable to Buddy's unusual appearance. With the intervention of a magical sea hawk, the friends realize the error of their ways and make amends.

In addition to this heartwarming story, this book bears a bonus in the form of an index of animals, insects and birds found in the Galapagos Islands - another excellent topic of discussion for all readers.

Concisely and honestly written, "Buddy Booby's Birthmark" addresses the realities of looking differently from others on several planes. Children with birthmarks will identify with Buddy, as will parents with Isabela, Buddy's mother, as they both work to handle their respective situations. This book will open up many valuable discussions between adults and children in houses where a birthmark - or any physical difference - is an issue.
