Angel’s kisses. Stork bites. Strawberry patches. They’re whimsical names for three of the many types of birthmarks affecting one in every 10 newborns.

Most disappear on their own by the time a child turns two. But one type of birthmark—the port-wine stain—becomes larger, thicker and darker with age. If left untreated, it can grow to the size of an adult hand, covering half the face with a bumpy surface that bleeds easily .
